Apesar do que parecem fazer crer alguns especialistas, o significado da situação actual transcende em muito a economia (e a ciência política, já agora). Não podemos lidar com actual situação como se se tratasse de um mero problema técnico passível de ser reajustado através da manipulação de umas quantas variáveis. Isto não é uma questão de 'modelos'. Precisamos de uma reflexão profunda sobre a ideologia que continua a estruturar a forma de entender o mundo—e isto aplica-se não só à direita mas tambem à esquerda. John Gray fê-lo há muito tempo, e transformou-se numa espécie de Schopenhaueriano moderno, com uma visão de mundo irracionalista e profundamente pessimista. Discordo de muito daquilo que ele escreve, mas admiro-o pela coragem e honestidade intelectual (e pessoal). Se existe alguém que procurou pensar o mundo em que vivemos, abandonando certezas e ideologias do passado, foi Gray. Temos de fazer algo semelhante. E espero sinceramente que seja possível chegar a conclusões diferentes.
